With his Piano Concerto and Peer Gynt, Edvard Grieg had acquired a reputation as composer with a special musical language throughout Europe during his lifetime. His great fame among the wide music-loving population was ensured especially by his character pieces for piano, his Lyric Pieces. Grieg had a sympathetic ear for arrangements of his works but he was very critical. When he himself composed a second part of Mozart's Piano Sonatas, he stated that his arrangement sounded excellent; so good, in fact, that he had reason to hope that Mozart would not turn in his grave…
Against this background, Martin Christoph Redel's arrangement of Six Lyric Pieces for clarinet and piano seems to be perfect: The clarinet, a very important instrumental colour in Grieg's orchestral works, is able to brilliantly portray the lyrical content of the pieces, using its wide and varied spectrum of sounds.
The pieces, arranged for Wolfgang Meyer in 2007, can be played separately, selectively or even as a 15-minute cycle.
