The present volume has been designed with two purposes in mind:

1: to provide an introduction to chorale-based organ music from the 17th and 18th centuries for those who have not had extensive experience with historically based technique and other performance practice issues appropriate to this music; and

2: to provide for all organists a source of chorale-based repertoire for use in church services, concerts, and other situations where such pieces are appropriate.

To meet the first of these goals the volume includes an extensive Preface that discusses relevant aspects of performance practice, and all of the pieces have been supplied with fingering and pedaling based on historical models (see below under Fingering and Pedaling for more information). In an attempt to serve both purposes, the works included have been chosen for their quality, variety, and musical interest.

The editors hope that the collection will be useful for organ students and more advanced organists alike.
