We do not know whether the young Mozart's "Divertimenti KV 136-138" were composed as orchestral works for a choral ensemble or if they are works for solo instruments that stand at the beginning of the then-new genre of string quartet. Evidence for both can be found in the transmission of the works.
This edition of parts with the Urtext of the New Mozart Edition completes the series of Mozart's string quartets in individual editions. Additionally, the separately available duplicate parts and the study score (TP 278) make it possible to perform the Divertimenti as orchestral works using the material from the New Mozart Edition.
