The Centre for Baroque Music in Versailles publishes, in its Découvertes collection, three new progressive collections for violin intended for students in cycles 1 and 2 of conservatory. These are essential anthologies for discovering the richness of the French baroque repertoire, from the court of Louis XIII to the Age of Enlightenment, and its violin school, initiated by Jean-Féry Rebel.
Each volume contains between ten and twenty pieces selected by recognized professors, and published in modern edition, respecting the musical text. These pages are complemented by an ornament table, some illustrations (period iconography), and a critical apparatus to raise awareness of the instrument's history and the editorial quality of musical texts.
The three volumes offer a valuable reservoir of pieces from which teachers can draw, whether they are addressing musicians familiar with early music practice or those following a modern curriculum. Students will be able to discover the richness of the French baroque repertoire, from the court of Louis XIII to the Age of Enlightenment, and its violin school, initiated by Jean-Féry Rebel.
Volume 2 contains more ambitious works, intended for students at the beginning of conservatory cycle 2, still focusing on style and introducing the sonata repertoire. It includes an air by Michel Lambert, well-known pieces by Lully, Couperin, and Rameau, as well as works by Senaillé, Duval, Gossec, Pleyel, Devienne, and others. These are accompanied by bass - either solo or continuo (in which case realizations are provided) - or in duet form.
The volume includes a separate realized basso continuo part.
